On August 19th, anti-fascist activists in Charlotte confronted Brian Talbert, leader of the proto-fascist organization Deplorable Pride. Talbert has led multiple rallies in support of nationalistic and discriminatory policies, including rallying LGBT people to support Trump and the police.
Deplorable Pride rose to prominence in 2017 after being denied a float in the annual Gay Pride Parade by Charlotte Pride. They claim that Charlotte Pride stifles the voices of LGBT conservatives. Talbert has been seen affiliated with fascist groups like the Proud Boys, and anti-fascist activists in Charlotte believe he is creating a platform for fascist organizing.
On June 9th, Talbert hosted a rally in support of his agenda, accompanied by members of the Proud Boys. During the 2018 Pride event, Talbert and his organization chose to protest it, with a small showing of supporters, but a large police presence to maintain order. The anti-fascist activists, who outnumbered Talbert’s supporters, dispersed after threats of arrest were made by police. They made it clear that they will do everything in their power to protect the people of Charlotte from fascist harm
