ECUADOR: Anti-Mining Activist Arrested by Reactionary Moreno Regime

The following is an unofficial translation of two statements put out by the Ecuadorian revolutionary organization Defense Front of the People’s Struggle condemning the arrest and calling for the release of Cristian Montero, a political activist in the fight against large mining companies that displace poor peasants throughout the Ecuadorian countryside.

Original statement from December 30

IMMEDIATE FREEDOM FOR CRISTIAN MONTERO AND ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS IN ECUADOR

In an act of weakness and fear, repressive apparatuses captured comrade Cristian Montero accusing him of rebellion, shutdown of public services, terrorism, and other things.

The strategy of the enemy is clear, that is, the old state represented by the government, the Armed Forces, and the police intends to decapitate the workers’ movement, fundamentally against the peasant organizations that have demonstrated, under proletarian leadership, to be the transforming muscle of this old semifeudal and semicolonial society.

The regime’s strategy also relies on the acquisition of weapons and other military equipment to engage the Armed Forces directly in the repression of the people; but not only that, they have deployed a whole contingent of intelligence elements that seek to gather information on the conscious element of the [working] class and the people to proceed with its neutralization. This whole campaign aims at a single objective, to give free rein to the economic and financial measures that the regime has not renounced despite the popular uprising in October.

The proletariat, poor peasantry, and people of Ecuador demand that the traitorous puppet regime of hunger and repression of [Lenin] Moreno immediately release comrade Cristian Montero. Do not believe that this campaign of persecution and imprisonment of popular fighters will stop the revolutionary maelstrom of the people, who are willing to confront their enemies at all levels.

The regime understands that repression only fuels the growing and determined popular protest. The regime does not believe that it will find the people and poor peasants armed with placards, pans, whistles, drums and pitiful chants, but will run into a popular force with correct proletarian leadership, firm, determined, willing to use revolutionary violence to stop the repressive campaign of the government and the economic measures that go against national sovereignty and undermine the popular economy.

FREEDOM FOR CRISTIAN MONTERO!

NO TO THE PERSECUTION OF POPULAR LEADERS AND FIGHTERS!

REPRESSION ATTRACTS THE GROWING POPULAR PROTEST!

YOU HAVE TO FIGHT THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE ON ALL LEVELS!

UNLEASH REVOLUTIONARY VIOLENCE AS THE PRINCIPAL FORM OF STRUGGLE!

Original statement from January 4

NO TO THE REPRESSION TO THE POOR PEASANTS, FREEDOM FOR CRISTIAN MONTERO!

The Defense Front of the People’s Struggles of Ecuador demands the immediate release of comrade Cristian Montero.

Comrade Cristian, together with the peasant masses, has been developing a firm fight against large-scale mining in the provinces of Cotopaxi, Bolívar, and Los Ríos.

The struggle undertaken by the peasant masses in these provinces adheres to the slogan that fighting against large-scale mining is a struggle for land, a fundamental revindication of the poor peasantry. The land for those work it, not for landowners, much less for mining companies.

Similarly, comrade Cristian played an important and legitimate role in the peasant-popular uprising of October last year. And it is precisely for having been at the forefront of the poor peasants in the province of Los Ríos, against the traitorous IMF measures of the Moreno regime, that today he has been arbitrarily detained without any legal basis by the repressive apparatus of the State.

Poor workers and peasants demand his immediate release and hold government minister Paula Romo responsible for the physical and psychological integrity of the comrade.

The regime has the dreams of a skinny dog if it considers that chasing and imprisoning land fighters will constrict or limit the growing popular protest: On the contrary, repression fuels the rebellion of poor peasants.

NOTHING AND NOBODY CAN STOP THE GREAT STORM OF WORKERS AND PEASANTS!

THE FIGHT AGAINST MINING IS A FIGHT FOR LAND!

IMMEDIATE FREEDOM FOR COMRADE CRISTIAN MONTERO!

LONG LIVE THE AGRARIAN REVOLUTION!
