Yankee Imperialists Escalate Tensions with Iran

By Jakob Stein

On Wednesday the Trump administration ordered all non-emergency US government personnel be evacuated from the US embassy in Baghdad and US consulate in Erbil, citing unspecified threats from Iran. The threats are based on dubious intelligence reports that are reminiscent of the faulty information that US imperialists used as a justification for the military invasion of Iraq.

The decision to withdraw personnel comes as the latest installment in a series of actions taken by Trump and his administration in an effort to escalate tensions with Iran with the ultimate goal of regime change in the country.

Trump started the process in May 2018 by withdrawing the US from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and imposing crippling economic sanctions on the country. Since then, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton have been leading the charge for military intervention.

Bolton in particular is infamous for being an imperialist zealot, calling for military action in Iran repeatedly since the George W Bush administration. He was instrumental in pushing Trump to withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, just one month after being appointed National Security Advisor.

His thirst for war and bloodshed in the third world is not limited to Iran however; he’s supported and pushed for nearly every bombing, invasion, and attempt at regime change over the past 20 years including Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela, Cuba, and the DPRK. He is known, even amongst some of the staunchest imperialists, as a fanatic who’s never seen a military conquest he didn’t like.

Pompeo has also been a proponent of regime change in both Iran and the DPRK over the past several years, serving as the director of the CIA from January 2017 until he was appointed Secretary of State by Trump in April of 2018.

As the USS Abraham Lincoln, a military aircraft carrier, makes its way to the Persian Gulf, the Trump administration is reportedly drawing up contingency plans that include sending 120,000 troops into the region. Although Trump denied this, he said that if the US did end up sending troops it would be willing to send, “a hell of a lot more.”

Most US allies have been reluctant to give any credence to the murky intelligence reports, including Chris Ghika, a British general and deputy commander of the U.S.-led anti-ISIS coalition in Iraq and Syria, publicly contradicting the claims of “increasing threat” from Iran. The only allies of US imperialism who have openly come out in support are countries that have longstanding tensions with Iran and Iranian-backed militias, namely Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, further exposing the contradictions within the imperialist camp.

The US imperialist state is compelled to engage in more foreign wars and subversion as it continues to decay; a military attack on Iran will surely trigger a protracted conflict similar to the quagmires in Iraq and Afghanistan. In order to continually expand the reach of Yankee imperialism and stabilize the inherently unstable moribund capitalism, the US government finds itself tying the noose that will ultimately cause its extinction.
